TITLE
The Number One Mistake Beginner Landscape Painters Make — And It Has Nothing to Do With Technique
BODY
If you have ever looked at a finished painting and thought your work never looks like that — I want to tell you something important.
It is probably not your brushwork. It is not your paints. It is not even your composition. It is the way you are seeing.
Most beginners paint what they think is there — not what is actually there. A tree becomes green. A mountain becomes gray. A shadow becomes dark. And the painting ends up feeling flat, lifeless, and somehow wrong — even when the technique is solid.
Here is what is really happening in that landscape in front of you.
That green tree? Look closer. You will find warm yellows where the sun hits the upper branches. Cool blues tucked into the shadowed interior. And if you look carefully, even touches of red or violet in the darker masses.
That gray mountain in the distance? It is shifting toward blue and violet. Atmospheric perspective — the depth of air between you and the subject — cools and mutes everything as it recedes. It is never simply gray.
That dark shadow on the ground? It is alive with reflected color from the sky, the surrounding foliage, the earth itself. Shadows are where some of the most beautiful, subtle color lives in a painting.
The problem is not effort. It is not talent. It is trained observation.
I know this from experience that spans sixty years and four completely different disciplines. As a microsurgeon I learned that the eye and the hand work together — that what you see determines what you do, and that seeing accurately is itself a skill that must be developed deliberately. The same truth applies when I am tending orchids in my greenhouse — reading the color and posture of a plant to understand what it needs without assumption. And the same truth applies at the easel.
In surgery, in horticulture, and in painting, the most important question is always the same: what is actually there, in this light, at this moment, that I might be assuming rather than truly seeing?
The good news is that trained observation is learnable. And once you start seeing this way, you cannot unsee it — and your paintings will never be the same.
This is the first thing I teach in my introductory landscape painting course — before a single brushstroke is applied. We learn to look. Everything else follows from there.
My course begins July 18, 2026. It is designed for retiring and recently retired professionals who are ready to finally begin. Enrollment is limited to ten participants.

This "I am a beginning painter and had been working on a painting for some time when the balcony wall simply would not look right. I asked Gorden for advice. He looked at it and explained immediately what was missing — the wall needed to be shaded darker, and the ground in front of it needed to be lighter. Those two small changes gave the wall depth, and the depth brought the entire painting to life. My painting is finished and I am genuinely proud of it."
