GORDEN'S OIL PAINTING
Learn the magic of beautiful painting

I want to say something directly to the person who has been thinking about painting for years and has not yet begun.
I know who you are. You are accomplished. You have spent decades building something significant. You have more discipline, more patience, and more accumulated experience of the world than most people your age. And somewhere in the back of your mind, for longer than you can clearly remember, there has been a quiet pull toward painting — toward making something beautiful with your own hands — that you have never quite gotten around to.
Maybe you think it is too late. Maybe you wonder whether you have the talent. Maybe you are waiting for the right moment, the right space, the right circumstances.
I want to tell you something about waiting.
I grew up on a farm in Kentucky with no access to art instruction of any kind. I became a physician, a Navy flight surgeon, a Vietnam veteran, a microsurgeon, a teacher of surgeons. I built a greenhouse and raised three thousand orchid plants. I skied challenging Alpine slopes for forty years. I retired at 80.
And I did not paint for thirty years.
In October 2021 the aspen trees at Yellowstone stopped me on a mountain road. In December 2021 I picked up a brush again. I have completed over 100 original oil paintings since then. Several hang in a Louisville gallery. My first personal show is in 2027.
I turned 86 in November of 2025.
The moment you are waiting for is not coming. It does not arrive. You make it, by beginning.
In surgery I learned that the preparation creates the conditions for the work — and then you take a breath, make the first incision, and trust what you have prepared. On ski slopes I learned the same lesson standing at the top of a challenging run: you take a few deep breaths, push off, and trust that your conditioned reflexes know what to do if you stay out of their way.
Painting is the same. You sketch. You transfer. You pick up the brush. And then you get out of the way and let the work happen.
The window is not closing. It has always been open.
My introductory landscape painting course begins July 25, 2026. Two consecutive Saturdays on Zoom. Ten participants maximum. Everything you need to paint a landscape you are genuinely proud of.

This "I am a beginning painter and had been working on a painting for some time when the balcony wall simply would not look right. I asked Gorden for advice. He looked at it and explained immediately what was missing — the wall needed to be shaded darker, and the ground in front of it needed to be lighter. Those two small changes gave the wall depth, and the depth brought the entire painting to life. My painting is finished and I am genuinely proud of it."
